AP organizational structure in the real estate industry

Q. I am reaching out to members who are in the real estate/development/property management industry sector. My organization develops and manages apartment buildings and student off-campus residences, among other things. I am finding that in this organization, AP is strictly a processing department, rather than being a vendor-facing, customer-centric department.
