Is 1099 nexus on a year-by-year basis?

Q. If our institution created nexus in another state in calendar year 2021 by employing a remote employee, does that nexus remain indefinitely for 1099-NEC purposes, or is nexus on a year-by-year basis? We didn't have an employee hired in that same state during calendar year 2022.
