Q. I'm questioning if the payee on an Accounts Payable check must match the payee on the 1099. For example, we receive a W-9 for an individual/sole proprietor with "Joe Smith" on Line 1 and "Smith Contracting" on Line 2. For TIN matching and the 1099-NEC, we will consider "Joe Smith" as the payee. However, does it matter what is on the Accounts Payable check? Does the payee per 1099-NEC need to exactly match the "pay to the order of" printed on the AP check? In this example, does the check need…
