January 2025: Leadership Pointers

One thing that many new managers discover is that being proficient in a particular hands-on role doesn’t do much to prepare them for leadership. Managing a team requires an entirely different skill set. While some newly minted leaders can jump in and begin learning the nuances of their new role without too much difficulty, some — most often those who are introverted by nature or a bit shy — have some work ahead of them.

However, never fear! Each new leader must go through a learning curve, and every individual who assumes a management role will eventually develop their own style of leadership. This month’s Insider offers some pointers for mastering the kind of leadership techniques that encourage and empower staff to do their best work while feeling valued and appreciated.

This Month’s Quick Take: Three Things Good Leaders Remember

  1. It’s not all about me.” A common mistake new managers make is to assume that it’s important for them to look good in their new role at all costs. However, it’s far more important that your team looks good. That will also ultimately reflect well on you, so pay attention to the staff, their needs and their quality of work, first and foremost.
  2. Let it go.” Another thing that some new leaders have trouble with is letting go of the day-to-day responsibilities. Of course, that’s an obvious comfort zone, but if you’re micromanaging and doing the hands-on work instead of delegating it, it sends a message that you don’t trust your team — while taking time away from your higher-level responsibilities.
  3. Keep a professional distance.” While this doesn’t mean you don’t care about the needs and feelings of the team — quite the contrary — it also means that it’s not professional to be too chummy with folks on the team in order to prevent the appearance of favoritism. This is a hard one for some new leaders, who must reframe any close, established relationships.

Going Lean

An AP manager of a health organization started a “lean journey,” using techniques designed to eliminate non-value-added processes. Instead of managing top-down, she discovered the benefits of letting the team run the business, because they’re the ones closest to the work.
