Q. The IRS regulations are clear that gift cards to employees are always compensation and should be reported on a W-2. But given that COVID has made it impossible for people to meet physically, can a distinction be made between a general merchandise gift card such as VISA/Mastercard that could be used for any purpose versus an Uber Eats or GrubHub card that is available for a limited time and to be consumed either during a Zoom meeting or in connection with a holiday event?
